Let’s explore how to turn this classic yoga sequence into a seasonal celebration, honoring the Solstice through breath, motion, and intention. We’ll consider the sacred symbolism of Surya Namaskar as a solar alignment ritual that harmonizes body, mind, and spirit with the vitality of the sun. We’ll then walk through a guided version of the Sun Salutations flow, ideal for both beginners and seasoned yogis looking to infuse their practice with fresh meaning.

Sun Salutations as a Summer Solstice Ritual?
Surya Namaskar, or Sun Salutations, have long been practiced as a moving meditation that honors the sun’s vital force. Rooted in yogic tradition, each posture in the sequence pays homage to the sun as both a cosmic force and a symbol of inner illumination. During the Summer Solstice, when sunlight reaches its annual peak, this flow becomes a celebration of life, radiance, and presence.

Practicing Surya Namaskar on or around the Solstice helps us attune to solar energy in a grounded, embodied way. The sequence encourages us to rise with intention, move with breath, and welcome the day’s light into our bodies and spirits. For those celebrating Litha, the Summer Solstice in the Wheel of the Year, incorporating Sun Salutations into your observance adds depth and dimension.
The Solstice marks a moment of natural abundance and energetic expansion. It’s the height of the solar year, when the sun’s power is felt most strongly across the earth. Just as the sun reaches its peak, we’re invited to expand into our fullest selves, to stretch beyond comfort, embrace joy, and stand in our own brilliance. Using this yoga flow as a ritual element bridges ancient tradition and modern embodiment, offering a radiant way to honor the balance of light and life, both above and below.

Preparing for Summer Solstice Sun Salutations
Before stepping onto the mat, we’ll set the tone for this sacred solar practice through simple preparation. By approaching our Summer Solstice Sun Salutations as both a physical ritual and spiritual celebration, we create space for alignment, not only with the sun, but with our highest selves.
Begin by choosing a space where sunlight can touch you. Outdoors in the early morning is ideal, but a sunlit room works beautifully too. Let this space feel open and energizing. Clear the area if needed, and consider lighting a candle, placing a few solar-aligned crystals like citrine or sunstone nearby, or even burning a stick of energizing incense like frankincense or rosemary to heighten the energy. You may also choose to bring a seasonal element to your mat, like a flower from the garden or another symbol of summer joy.

Before beginning your practice, pause to set your intention. You might focus on themes like renewal, vitality, joy, abundance, or simply gratitude for the light within and around you. Let your breath settle, your mind soften, and your body begin to awaken with your awareness. From this grounded space, your Sun Salutations become a personal offering of presence.

Summer Solstice Sun Salutations Yoga Flow
Each pose in this flow offers us an opportunity to awaken our bodies, anchor our breath, and attune to the energy of the season. The sequence includes a series of postures, performed in a flowing rhythm that’s guided by the breath, and is designed to mirror the sun’s journey through the sky. Let yourself begin slowly, get used to the postures, and then try to move between them at the pace of your breathing as you repeat the sequence.

1: Mountain Pose (Tadasana)
Begin grounded and tall, with your hands at heart center, palms together. Connect with the sun’s presence and your own inner fire, then bring to mind your intention as you start the flow.
2: Upward Salute (Urdhva Hastasana)
Inhale deeply as you reach your hands, palms still together, up overhead and stretch upwards to make your body long. Imagine drawing in solar energy and receiving vitality. Focus on opening the front of your body to enhance the stretch.
3. Forward Fold (Uttanasana)
With a soft exhale, let your body fold forward in a bowing motion, hinging at the hips. Continue this release until your torso is folded over onto your thighs, and let your head and arms relax, hanging down.

4. Half Lift (Ardha Uttanasana)
With an inhale, gently straighten and lift the spine until it is perpendicular to the floor. Bringing your hands to rest just above your knees for support, as you invite clarity and lightness into the mind and body.

5. Plank to Low Plank (Phalakasana to Chaturanga)
Exhaling, bring your hands back down to the floor as you fold forward again. Then step or jump your legs back into a plank position, engaging your core strength as you lower down by bending your elbows.
6. Upward-Facing Dog (Urdhva Mukha Svanasana)
Inhale as you drop your hips towards the floor and lift your chest upwards by straightening out your arms, energizing the spine and opening your heart.
7. Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)
Exhale as you push your hips back and up, stretching long through both the spine and legs, and use all four hands and feet to ground down for stability.

8. Return to Forward Fold
Inhale and brace through your core, stepping or hopping forward into the full fold again. Focus on releasing tension and allow the energy to flow as you relax your head and arms downward.

9. Rise to Standing
Exhale and circle the arms overhead, lifting back into the Upward Salute with palms together, then lower your hands to the front of your chest and inhale as you return to Mountain Pose to complete the cycle.
10. Repeat the Cycle
Aim for 3 to 12 rounds of the full sequence, depending on your energy and time. With practice and repetition, each breath will carry you from one pose to the next. You may move slowly and mindfully throughout the entire flow, or increase your pace for a more invigorating experience. With each inhale, imagine drawing on the solar energy and bring it into your being, before radiating it outward through presence, grace, and devotion with each exhale.
Throughout the practice, stay attuned to your body’s wisdom. Let it be a ritual of alignment rather than pushing or straining. With intention, this graceful flow becomes a meditation—an offering of breath, movement, and gratitude for the life-giving force of the sun.

Final Relaxation & Integration
After completing the desired number of rounds, gently lower yourself down to the mat. Then, lay on your back and allow your body to fully stretch out. With your legs extended, slightly wider than hip-width apart, let your feet relax naturally. Rest your arms alongside your body and close your eyes, taking deep breaths to settle into your final posture: Shavasana.
As you relax, reconnect with the warmth of the sun and bring your attention back to your intention. Allow yourself to meditate here for at least 3 minutes, fully relaxing into the support of the ground. Encourage a complete surrender of any tension by gently asking yourself: “where can I relax a little bit more?”
Once you’re feeling rejuvenated, slowly begin to take deeper breaths, and then start to make small movements in your fingers and toes. Round your wrists and ankles, stretch your arms overhead, and finally hug both knees to your chest for a few moments before slowly making your way up to standing.

Taking the Light with You
The true power of a Summer Solstice practice like Surya Namaskar isn’t confined to the mat. What we cultivate in breath, movement, and intention can then be carried with us into our choices, rhythms, and presence in the world. Solar energy alignment is way of moving through life with more clarity, vitality, and purpose.
Each posture and breath awakens an inner radiance that wants to express itself in tangible ways. Confidence kindled in your core can shape how you speak your truth. A feeling of openness across your chest can become a willingness to say yes to joy. Even the stillness at the end of your flow can inform how you pause and listen before responding to what life offers.

We take the light with us when we choose aligned action. By taking intentional steps, however small, we can begin to reflect the clarity that we feel in the motion of our Summer Solstice Sun Salutations. This might mean tending to our creative spark, setting a loving boundary, or simply spending time outdoors and feeling the sun on our skin. Try asking yourself:
What would honoring the light within look like today?
Let your answer guide you. Perhaps it’ll look like a bold leap, or maybe it’s a surrender into deeper trust. Regardless, the solar energy of Litha reminds us that we are meant to shine through natural unfolding. Your Surya Namaskar practice is the ritual invocation, but what follows is your sacred embodiment of it.
